Research is essential to grow your kingdom. Research is possible in the following categories:
- Economic - increases your ability to raise tax and produce resources through bonuses. Some Economic research may affect the capability of other units.
- Military - changes the abilities of your military units.
- Architecture - unlocks new levels for your buildings.
- Armament - provides you with new armor and weapons.
Not all research is available to you immediately: you need to achieve basic research in each category to start. Research costs gold and in some cases resources and takes time to achieve. Each type of research has multiple levels, each with a higher cost and time requirement. Some types of research are only available following the completion of other research topics, or through having various levels of buildings available.
An example of a technology that you can only find by researching other technologies would be "Town Ordinance", which requires 1 level of research in both "Wood Gathering" and "Farming". By researching higher levels of technology and building more buildings, you will gain access to new technologies.
You can research a maximum of 4 topics at any time (unless you have purchased a premium account, in which case you can research 8). The time to complete an item of research is shown in the description and, once you have started research, it is visible next to the research description and in the summary pane below the town screen.

This chart shows the order in which researches become available to you. Most researches are also dependent on build levels for access.
- Black is Architecture Research.
- Green is Economic Research.
- Blue is Military Research.
The Armaments tree is not shown as all arms and armours become available on completion of Apprentice Blacksmith and does not cross reference with the other streams. As things change so will the chart
